- Planned Storage
When managing a warehouse, one will receive inventory in all different shapes and sizes. An easy fix for this is to obtain different sized shelves, preferably made of steel. Another thing to consider is the fact that not every type of product, or inventory, is going to sell the same. For instance, blue door knobs may sell as much as lawn mowers, so it would make no sense to store a bunch of something that’s barely sold.
- Color Coding
For the sake of speed and productivity, every shelf should be color coded appropriately for the type of items stored in. This will allow employees to find items in a quick fashion. One could alternatively use a number system if that’s what is preferred. Not only will color coding help with finding items, but it will make taking inventory a whole lot easier as well.
- Keep Most-Sold Items Easily Accessible
Products or items that are sold the most should be kept in the very front of the shelf or warehouse. Doing this makes thing both easier and quicker for employees. However, one of the best and most effective things to do is to invest in some shallow shelves. Basically, these shelves avoid the trouble of having to reach for an item in the very back of a shelf.
- Stock at the Right Height
Commonly sold merchandise should also be stored on lower shelves as well, especially items that are really heavy. This approach will reduce the time consuming use of forklifts in high places. Better yet, one could buy some shelves that aren’t too tall in height, making things easier all together. Whatever one gets, they should stick with steel shelves, for both safety and productivity reasons.
- Designated Equipment Area
All equipment, such as forklifts, pump trucks and picking trolleys should be kept in one area, away from all storage shelves and other empty space. This will allow workers to move through shelves much quicker. It will also provide a much safer work environment as well. Overall, it makes a warehouse safer, more productive and professional looking.
- Seasonal Products
Obviously, seasonal products come only once a year, so it would be wise to avoid over stockpiling on these items. Preferably, one should keep all seasonal items in one area of the warehouse. This will make it much easier to clear out when the season or holiday is finally over. The worse thing to do would be stockpiling every shelf full of seasonal items, only to find them taking up space and not selling.
- Training Staff
All of the above mentioned tips go out the window if a warehouse has untrained, unorganized employees. Make sure that all workers are well aware of what goes where. Ideally, they should be able to remember all the above mentioned tips off the top of their head. If one follows all seven of these tips, they can look forward to a well organized, productive warehouse.
